The Artists:

Barraz-Karen_headshot Karen Barraza, soprano
Karen Barraza is a second-year Resident Artist from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. She attended Taller de la Ópera de la Sinaloa and received a scholarship from Concurso Internacional de Canto Sinaloa. She is a recipient of the Pepita Serrano Prize from the Carlo Morelli Singing Competition in 2014 and the Audience Award from the 2013 Sinaloa International Singing Competition. At AVA, Karen has performed the roles Musetta in La bohème and Elvira in L’italiana in Algeri. Other roles include Musetta in La bohéme, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and the Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, all with Teatro Pablo de Villavicencio.
Jorge-Espino-baritone Jorge Espino, baritone
Jorge Espino is a second-year Resident Artist from Mexico City, Mexico. He attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música and is a recipient of the Young Singer Award from the XXIX Concurso Nacional de Canto Carlo Morelli in 2011 along with placing Second in AVA’s Giargiari Bel Canto Competition in 2014. At AVA, Jorge performed Schaunard in La bohème, Haly in L’taliana in Algeri, Lescaut in Manon and Prince Yeletsky in Pique Dame. Other roles include Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Centro Cultural Ollin Yoliztli and Aurelio in La mulata de Córdoba with the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico.
Armando-Piña-baritone Armando Piña, baritone
Armando Piña is a second-year Resident Artist from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. He received a B.M. in Voice from Escuela Superior de Música in Mazatlán. In 2014 Armando won First Prize for the Concurso Internacional de Canto Sinaloa. At AVA, Armando performed Marcello in La bohème, Germont in La traviata and Count Tomsky in Pique Dame. Previous roles include Marcello in La bohème and Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia both with Cultura Mazatlán.
Salas-Galeano-headshot Galeano Salas, tenor
Galeano Salas is a second-year Resident Artist from Houston, Texas. He received a B.M. in Vocal Performance from University of Houston and M.M. in Opera Performance from Yale University. Galeano won the Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and is a Second Prize winner of the Classical Singer Vocal Competition (Young Artist Classical Division) in 2014. At AVA, Galeano performed the roles of Rodolfo in La bohème, Alfredo in La traviata and Hermann in Pique Dame. Previous roles include Stage Manager (cover) in Our Town and Rodolfo (cover) in La bohème both with Central City Opera.
